Who Flips the Switch?

By Karen Houston

We are made to think we are powerless when faced with adversity, or our adversary the devil.  But how powerless are we?  What is our authority as believers in Christ?

Directing trafficAuthority is delegated power.  When an officer directs traffic at the scene of an accident he can raise his hand and cars will stop.  He doesn’t have the physical power to stop a car with his hand, but he has power of the authority of the government he serves.  People recognize this authority and obey his commands.

God delegates spiritual power to us.  I like the way John McArthur puts it:  Spiritual power is the mark of every Christian who submits to God’s Word and Spirit.  It is not reserved for some special class of Christian, but for those who discipline their minds and spirits to study the Word, understand it, and live by it.  Although the outer physical person become weaker with age, the inner spiritual person should grow stronger through the Holy Spirit, who will energize, revitalize, and empower the obedient, committed Christian.

Paul prayed two prayers in Ephesians for us as believers:

Ephesians 3:14-19 (New King James Version)

14 For this reason I bow my knees to the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, 15 from whom the whole family in heaven and earth is named, 16 that He would grant you, according to the riches of His glory, to be strengthened with might through His Spirit in the inner man, 17 that Christ may dwell in your hearts through faith; that you, being rooted and grounded in love, 18 may be able to comprehend with all the saints what is the width and length and depth and height— 19 to know the love of Christ which passes knowledge; that you may be filled with all the fullness of God.

“For this reason” is a “therefore” statement which points to the preceding verses.  The “reason” this refers to is based on truths of several verses:

  • Believers are spiritually alive. (Eph 2:5)
  • Believers are united into God’s household. (Eph 2:19)
  • Believers are the church. (Eph 2:20)
  • The church is built on the foundation of the apostles. (Eph 2:20)
  • God dwells in the people of His church permanently. (Eph 2:22)

For these reasons Paul is praying for us to discipline our minds and spirits to study the Word, understand it, and live by it.  Only then can we begin to grasp the fullness and completeness of God’s love towards us.  Ultimately a Christian should become so strong spiritually, so compelled by divine love, that they are dominated by the Lord with nothing left of self.

Ephesians 1:16-20 (New King James Version)

16 do not cease to give thanks for you, making mention of you in my prayers: 17 that the God of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of glory, may give to you the spirit of wisdom and revelation in the knowledge of Him, 18 the eyes of your understanding being enlightened; that you may know what is the hope of His calling, what are the riches of the glory of His inheritance in the saints, 19 and what is the exceeding greatness of His power toward us who believe, according to the working of His mighty power 20 which He worked in Christ when He raised Him from the dead and seated Him at His right hand in the heavenly places,

In verses 19 & 20 we see God has placed supernatural power, “raising of the dead” power in the hands of believers!

switched onMost everyone has electric service in their homes.  Wires lead in from a power pole that ties us to the power company.  They generate the power and its available 24/7.  If I want to turn on the light to read a book, I don’t have to call them and say “send me power for the light,” it’s already here, I just need to flip the switch.

In the same way, God has already given us the power and authority to deal with our adversary.  We just need to flip the switch.

Since these prayers are for all believers, we can make them first person by substituting “me” wherever Paul says “you.”

Several years ago, I prayed a personalized version of Eph 1:17-20 each day with the belief that the Lord would take me to a deeper level in the Spirit.  He did!  There’s power in praying the Word of God!

Take up the challenge and flip the switch!
